Preparing Employers  to Reintegrate Combat Exposed Veterans with Disabilities

Background and Need

It is projected that a significant segment of the United States military will begin transitioning back to the day-to-day working world from the Iraq and Afghanistan war during the years 2007 and 2008.  These dedicated public servants will bring a host of assets and skills to civilian workforces, but also remnants of war — some seen and unseen.  As of the first quarter 2008, nearly 130,000 U. S. troops have been seriously wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).  The mere stress of war takes an even more sweeping toll.

The New England Journal of Medicine reports, "research conducted after other military conflicts has shown that deployment stressors and exposure to combat, result in considerable risk of mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, substance abuse, impairment of social functioning and in the ability to work, and the increased used of health care services."  (emphasis added).  Reportedly up to half of the 1.6 million* American soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD.

Reaching Solutions Through Specialized Training

Reconciling relevant medical data with sound efforts to provide inclusive, sensitive work environments and/or mandated accommodations for veterans demands the insights of multiple disciplines.  Maryland headquartered DESTIN Enterprises, LLC (DESTIN), in association with former Walter Reed psychiatrist Dr. Cynthia J. Washington, developed a comprehensive training and education program known as PERCEVD, "Preparing Employers to Reintegrate Combat Exposed Veterans with Disabilities"

PERCEVD embodies a new discipline from the combined expertise of mental health care providers, military professionals, war veterans, employment management and diversity consultants.  It is essential for managing interplay between reasonable accommodations and conduct rules for combat exposed veterans, whether an employer's related goal is diversity and inclusion, ADA or USERRA compliance.

DESTIN experts are available to meet and explore your capabilities and needs as an employer overseeing a diverse workforce.  Our representatives would be happy to detail the PERCEVD curriculum for you through comprehensive written proposals and/or oral presentations.  We are prepared to devise customized, affordable training strategies to educate employers, increase employee retention and productivity, as well as improve employer-employee relations.  And, of course, PERCEVD is itself an accommodation of combat exposed veterans who must be reintegrated into responsive work environments to thrive.  For some of these transitioning employees, PERCEVD is an entitlement.
